(KINGSTON, ON) - A RIDE program at a Highway 401 offramp in Kingston has resulted in an impaired driving arrest.

On Friday, June 6, 2025, shortly after 8:00 pm, officers with the Frontenac Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program at the Highway-38 exit of the eastbound 401.

Officers stopped a pick-up truck, and it was noted that a child in the vehicle was not wearing a seatbelt. Officers utilized an approved roadside alcohol screening device, and the driver was arrested and transported for the detachment for further testing.

Derek LAWLESS, age 37 of Kingston, has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Driving while a passenger under 16 is not properly wearing a seatbelt
  • Fail to comply with an undertaking

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kingston on July 24, 2025.

The individual’s driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days, and their vehicle was impounded.
