Male Charged with Impaired Driving After Collision with GoBus in St. Catharines

On Sunday, March 22, 2026, at approximately 4:00 pm uniform officers with the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) 1 District (St. Catharines/Thorold) were called to the North Service Road in St. Catharines between YMCA Drive and YMCA Drive for a report of a motor vehicle collision.

A northbound Honda CRV hit a southbound GoBus head on. There were 18 passengers on the bus. The driver of the GoBus and five passengers, including an infant, were transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The driver, 56-year-old Michael WINGER of Omemee, was arrested for impaired operation of a conveyance. He was taken to an NRPS facility to provide a sample of his breath. WINGER was found to be three times over the legal limit of blood alcohol concentration.

WINGER was charged with the following offences.

  • Impaired Operation of a Conveyance C.C
  • Impaired Operation of a Conveyance Exceed BAC C.C
  • Fail to Surrender Insurance Card C.A.I.A
  • Drive Vehicle or Boat with Cannabis Readily Available C.C.A

WINGER has had his driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and the vehicle he was operating has been impounded for 7 days. WINGER was released on a later court date.
