(UNORGANIZED TOWNSHIP, ON) - One person has died and another has sustained serious injuries following a structural fire in a remote area.

On May 17, 2026, at approximately 12:30 am, members of the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a structural fire on an island located on Little Gabodin Lake, accessible by portage from Panache Lake.

Due to the remote location, specialized resources were deployed to access the scene and assist with the extraction efforts, including the North East Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), OPP Aviation Services, and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC).

As a result of the incident, a 26-year-old person from Sudbury was pronounced deceased at the scene. A second individual, a 27-year-old person from Sudbury, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The investigation remains ongoing by the Nipissing West OPP Crime Unit, with assistance from the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal.

Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
