(SELWYN TOWNSHIP, ON) - An officer from the Peterborough County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged an individual with impaired driving after conducting a traffic stop for a stop sign related offence.

On Monday April 20, 2026, at approximately 9:00pm, an officer from the Peterborough County OPP detachment was on patrol in Bridgenorth when they observed a vehicle fail to come to a complete stop at an intersection. The officer, while attempting to catch up to the vehicle, observed erratic driving and conducted a traffic stop. The officer approached the lone driver of the vehicle and upon speaking with them, determined them to be impaired at which point they were arrested. The officer while dealing with the accused, observed an open container of alcohol within reach of the driver. The accused was taken to the Peterborough County OPP detachment for further tests.

Kolby VANWESTEN (age 20) of Ennismore, ON., was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor
  • Young driver - B.A.C. above zero
  • Disobey stop sign - fail to stop

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on June 2, 2026.

The accused had their driver’s licence suspended for 90-days, and their vehicle impounded for seven days.
