IMPAIRED DRIVING CHARGES LAID IN TWO UNRELATED INCIDENTS WITHIN ONE HOUR

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) - Members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged two motorists in separate impaired driving investigations occurring less than an hour apart.
On March 29, 2026, shortly before 3:00 pm, officers responded to a report from a concerned citizen about a passenger vehicle failing to maintain its lane on Ganaraska Road in the Municipality of Port Hope.
Police located a vehicle matching the description and conducted a traffic stop. After speaking with the driver, officers entered into an impaired driving investigation. The motorist was taken into custody and transported to a detachment for further testing.
Derrick KIRYOWA (27) from Whitby, has been charged with:
- Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
- Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
Later the same day, at approximately 3:40 pm, officers responded to a single‑vehicle collision on County Road 45 in the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were dispatched as a precaution after the vehicle left the roadway and entered the ditch.
After speaking with the uninjured driver, officers initiated an impaired driving investigation. The individual was subsequently taken into custody.

Each of the accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a future date. A 90-day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension (ADLS) and a seven-day vehicle impound were also imposed.
