(KIRKLAND LAKE, ON) - The Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a counterfeit bill.

On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report from the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) in Kirkland Lake, of a counterfeit $20 bill located. Police have seized this bill and the investigation is still ongoing to determine the origin.

The bill in question was missing an ‘a’ at the end of Canada, on the bill indicated “This is Not Legal Tender” and “Film Production”, additionally, it was paper with no clear transparent window.

Tips to identify a counterfeit money:

  • Canadian banknotes are made of smooth polymer (plastic), not paper
  • Raised ink should be felt on the portrait, large (20,50,100) and “Bank of Canada”
  • Transparent windows should be clear with sharp metallic details
  • Holding the maple leaf to light to reveal the hidden “100”
  • Multiple bills with the same serial number are suspicious
  • Blurry print, poor quality or wording like “Prop Money”, “Film Production”
  • Politely refuse the money and explain that you suspect its counterfeit
  • Ask the customer for another note (check it too)
  • Advise the customer to check the suspicious note with local police
  • Inform your local police of possible attempts to pass counterfeit money
