THIEVES ARRESTED AFTER STOLEN CARDS USED

(Fort Frances, ON) - Thieves who made several purchases after stealing a wallet were located and taken into custody.
On May 21, 2026, at approximately 1:00 pm, the Rainy River District Detachment Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a complaint that a wallet was stolen from a parked vehicle on Riverview Drive. The owner’s cards were used at several businesses around Fort Frances.
Officers obtained transaction times and were able to identify the suspects with store security footage. Two people were arrested in connection with the case.
Stanley WENELL-JACK 46-years-old from Fort Frances is charged with the following criminal offences:
- Two counts of fraud under $5000
- One count of use of credit card obtained by crime
- One count of possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
- One count of failing to comply with an undertaking
- One count of failing to comply with probation
Colton LENGYEL 22-years-old from Fort Frances is charged with the following criminal offences:
- Seven counts of fraud under $5000
- One count of use of credit card obtained by crime
- One count of possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
Both accused were held in custody by police and have bail hearings scheduled for May 29, 2026, in Fort Frances.
Police are reminding residents to take proactive steps to deter opportunistic thieves. The OPP urges all vehicle owners to:
- Always lock your vehicle, even if parked in your driveway
- Never leave keys or key fobs inside the vehicle
- Remove all valuables from plain sight
- Park in well-lit areas when possible
- Report any suspicious activity to police immediately
