The Guelph Police Service is investigating a reported phone scam, which saw a Guelph resident losing approximately $28,000.

On Saturday night at approximately 9:00 PM, the victim received a call from a 1-800 number and someone claiming to work for the financial institute that they used for their banking. The caller claimed that the email and phone number of the account holder had been compromised. The caller then provided the victim with some of their personal information and the last 4 digits of their account number.

Several text messages with verification codes were sent to the victim, to which they confirmed with the caller. Upon growing suspicious of the caller, the victim ended the call and called their financial institute to find their account wad flagged and frozen due to suspicious activity.
