A Guelph man faces charges after trying to break into a downtown home during a dispute with the owners early Saturday.

Just after 6 am officers were called to a home on Dublin Street North. The owners said a man knocked on their door and asked if he could have some furniture which had been left outside. When he was told he could not the man became angry and confrontational.

The owners went back into the house where their children were sleeping, but the man tried to gain entry by punching through a screen and pulling the storm door hard enough to break the handle. Officers arrived and saw the man in a verbal confrontation with the owner on the front lawn. He was arrested after a short foot pursuit.

A 29-year-old Guelph man is charged with attempted break and enter, breaching probation and failing to leave a property when directed. He was held for a bail hearing Monday.
