Residents are reminded to be cautious when dealing with strangers after a Guelph man lost more than $3,600 while trying to assist someone in need.

Approximately 5 pm Monday the man in his 80s was in a plaza near Eramosa Road and Stevenson Street North. He was approached by a young woman who said she was trying to pay for a taxi but the driver wouldn’t accept cash.

The victim was asked to pay the fare in exchange for $20 cash and agreed to do so. Some time later he discovered he had been handed someone else’s debit card and the suspects had kept his, which was used to make $3,600 in withdrawals and purchases.

The female was described as white, late teens or early 20s, 5’7” with black hair. The driver was a white male in his 30s with a heavy build. They were driving a dark-coloured vehicle.
