A man was arrested at gunpoint after reports Friday night of someone pointing a firearm towards residences.

Just after 10 pm police were called to the area of Woolwich Street and Marilyn Drive after a witness reported a man pointing a black handgun at homes in the area.

Several officers responded and the man was located outside and arrested at gunpoint. A replica firearm was recovered.

A 31-year-old Guelph man is charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He will appear in court July 25.

Residents are reminded to be cautious when using or possessing replica firearms in public. They can cause concern if witnesses believe them to be real, and officers responding to such calls must assume the firearm is real until proven otherwise.
