The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a minor wire theft caused more than $20,000 in damage.

On Monday afternoon, the manager of a business near Edinburgh Road North and Willow Road contacted police. She had arrived at work in the morning to find the heating was not working. A technician attended and found extensive damage had been done to two of three rooftop units. It appeared copper wire valued at less than $100 had been cut and removed from one of the units.

The technician estimated the damage to each unit at $12,000 to $18,000.

Security video showed a man lowering a ladder from the roof approximately 3:15 am and climbing down. The ladder and a reciprocating saw were left behind.

Also Monday afternoon, an employee of a business near Regal Road and Curtis Drive reported their heating unit had been damaged sometime over the weekend after a fence was cut to gain access. It is not known whether any theft occurred.
