IMPAIRED DRIVER CHARGED AFTER SINGLE VEHICLE COLLSION

(ESSA TOWNSHIP, ON) - Members of the Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged one individual following a single vehicle collision with a hydro pole that resulted in a brief power outage and an impaired driving investigation.
On Sunday, January 18, 2026, shortly after 2:00 am, Nottawasaga OPP officers responded to a report of a vehicle that had collided with a hydro pole on Browns Line in Essa Township. When officers arrived, the driver was attempting to leave the scene. Police stopped the vehicle and started an investigation.
As a result of the investigation, the driver, Riley BUFFAN, a 20-year-old, of Essa Township, was arrested and charged with:
- Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
- Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
- Operation While Prohibited Under the Criminal Code
The accused received a 90 day driver’s licence suspension, and a 45 day vehicle impound. The accused was released on a Form 10 Undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Bradford to answer to the charges.
