Hamilton Police Respond to Weekend Shooting

The Hamilton Police Service is investigating a weekend shooting that sent one person to Hospital. Detectives with the Shooting Response Team has investigated and an individual has been arrested and charged with this shooting.
On May 2, 2026 at approximately 9:30 pm, Hamilton Police responded to the area of Steven Street between Wilson Street and King Street for reports of a shooting. One individual suffered serious gunshot injuries and was treated at a local medical Centre.
Investigators identified a blood trail believed to be associated to the shooting and while following it, located a discarded firearm. Based on the evidence at hand, Detectives believe that the recovered firearm was the same one used in the shooting. Furthermore, they were able to determine that the individual who suffered the gunshot wound was the same individual alleged to be responsible for the shooting. The accused is believed to have shot himself during an attempted home invasion.
As a result of this investigation, Eric HAINES, a 38 year old from Hamilton has been arrested and charged with the following offences:
1. Break and Enter, contrary to the provisions of s. 348 (1)(b) of the Criminal Code
2. Criminal Harassment, contrary to the provisions of s. 264(2) of the Criminal Code
3. Discharge Firearm with Intent, contrary to the provisions of s. 244(1) of the Criminal Code
4. Fail to Comply with Probation Order (4 counts), contrary to the provisions of s. 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code
5. Knowledge of an Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, contrary to the provisions of s. 92(1) of the Criminal Code
6. Possession of a Firearm, contrary to a court order, (9 counts), contrary to the provisions of s. 117.01(1) of the Criminal Code
7. Possession of a loaded, prohibited firearm, contrary to the provisions of s. 95(1) of the Criminal Code
8. Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, contrary to the provisions of s. 244.2(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
The accused has been held in custody to have his bail opposed.
