(WALPOLE ISLAND FIRST NATION, ON) - An individual is facing multiple charges following a traffic stop on Walpole Island First Nation.

On March 31, 2026, just before 3:30 pm, members of the Walpole Island Police Service were conducting general patrol when they initiated a traffic stop on Chiefs Road.

During the investigation, further testing was required. Members of the Lambton Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were engaged to assist.

As a result, Thomas ALTIMAN, 26-year-old of Walpole Island First Nation, was arrested and charged under the Criminal Code, the Highway Traffic Act, and the Liquor Licence and Control Act with the following offences:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm (two counts)
  • Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm (two counts)
  • Transport firearm, weapon prohibited device or ammunition in a careless manner (two counts)
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose (two counts)
  • Mischief - interfere with lawful use, enjoyment or operation of property - under $5000
  • Drive motor vehicle - no licence
  • Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor

A 90-day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension (ADLS) and a seven-day vehicle impoundment was initiated as per statute.

The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia.
