FRAUD CHARGES LAID AFTER SEVERAL MONTH INVESTIGATION

(PEMBROKE, ON) - A Quebec resident is facing several fraud-related charges after a criminal investigation was launched in September 2025. The Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) began investigating after an area resident reported fraudulent activity while attempting to purchase an automobile on an online marketplace. The victim reported paying a deposit to an individual who claimed to be a car dealer, but the vehicle was never delivered.
On February 17, 2026, UOV OPP officers attended Hawkesbury, Ontario and arrested an individual in connection with this incident. The investigation was conducted with the assistance of OPP’s Integrated Fraud Awareness and Response Initiative (IFARI) and the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC).
As a result of this incident 24-year-old Anaique Fankam KAKANOU of Montreal, Quebec, has been charged with the following Criminal Code (CC) offences:
- Fraud under $5000
- Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
- Personation with intent to obtain property - identity theft
The accused was released to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on March 17, 2026.
