(PEMBROKE, ON) - The Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) with assistance from Renfrew County Paramedic Services located a stranded person after their ATV became immobilized in Laurentian Hills Township.

On June 2, 2026, just after 1:00 am, OPP located a party that had become lost while travelling on an OVRT (Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail). The party contacted police in the evening of June 1, 2026, stating he was lost. The party had been travelling the trails when their ATV became immobile. UOV officers, OPP Aviation Services, Emergency Response Team (ERT), Canine (K9), with the assistance of Renfrew Paramedic Services including their Sierra Team worked together to locate the individual.

The male was located by the OPP helicopter, and once retrieved, was assessed by paramedics at the scene and released.

Here are a few suggestions to help when planning a wilderness trip or risky recreational activity;

  1. Know your limits. You should plan a trip or activity that matches your experience, skills and fitness level. Overextending yourself or overestimating your skills could result in a dangerous situation which may require search and rescue.
  2. If you want to expand your abilities, travel with an experienced friend or professional guide or take a course to improve your wilderness skills.
  3. Leave a route plan with a friend or family member with an expected return date. Tell them to contact the appropriate authority if you do not return on time and have not contacted them about any delays.
  4. Carry a cell phone, if they work in the area you are visiting, or a satellite phone for emergency calls.
  5. Carry all necessary emergency equipment including a first aid kit, extra food, water, flashlight, warm clothing and a map of the area travelled.
  6. Carry spare batteries for any GPS device and a map and compass for backup. Know how to use them.
