OPP RESPOND TO PERSON IN CRISIS IN ELMIRA

(ELMIRA, ON) - An individual has been arrested following an incident in Elmira.
On January 28, 2026, at approximately 12:15 pm, members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), alongside the West Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), the West Region Tactical Response Unit (TRU), the West Region Crisis Negotiator Team and the Wellington County Crime Unit responded to a report of an incident at an address in Elmira in the Region of Waterloo, involving a person in crisis.
As a result of the investigation, a 50-year-old from Elmira, is charged under the Criminal Code with:
- Pointing a firearm
- Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
- Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm
While in police custody, the accused became aggressive with police and was further charged with:
- Assault a Peace Officer
The accused remains in police custody pending a bail hearing.
The officer sustained minor injuries.
The accused’s name is being withheld, out of concern for their well-being.
